Maui, Hawaii - Day 6 Back at Kaanapali

It's nice having a hotel room that is facing west.  The room was super dark.  That combined with ear plugs and the noise maker meant I slept in until 10am.  Breakfast was whatever we could find.  Theresa decided she'd try her passion fruit.  It was not a good experience.  I think "snot" was one of the descriptions that was used.

We didn't have many plans for the day so we decided to go snorkeling.  Right by the black rock is supposed to be a good place to see sea turtles.  We hopped in the water and swam over to the black rock.  The fish are always fun to see, but the main draw we came out for was the turtles.

After 10 minutes in the water, sure enough, about 15 feet below us, a turtle comes slowly swimming along.  Yay!  Finally able to see a turtle!  I dove down to get a better look at it.

Goodbye Mr. Turtle.

We continued for another 5 minutes and saw two more turtles.  After a few more minutes, Theresa's ears started to hurt so she decided to head back.

Looking up at our hotel building from the water.

I continued around the bend to another open beach.  I walked approx 1.5 miles to the end of the beach (red line) around to the more northern facing beaches.  It was much more windy up there.

After that, I decided it'd be a fun challenge to try to swim/snorkel back to our hotel.  It would be quite a distance (2 miles, blue line up above), but I wanted to see what was in between there and our hotel and see whether we really had the best snorkeling.

Along the way, I found a cool little eel.  He kept sticking his head into different holes and cracks trying to find food.

There were a few little forests of coral.

I even ran into a big turtle.

The rest of the afternoon, Theresa and I just laid out.  The skies were blue, the wind was calm, and we enjoyed reading a book on our porch.

The birds were out and enjoyed the treats we gave them.

I love this camera and lens.  Look at the detail in the feathers.  You can even see the hotel reflected in the bird's eye.

For dinner, we tried a Chinese place close by.  It didn't impress us.  We came back to the room and watched a movie (A Knight's Tale) to finish out the night.
