Good morning from the top of Diamond Head!
What are we doing up so early?
We've got a lot of things planned for today. To start it out, a lot of us got up before sunrise and headed to the Diamond Head trail. The gates open at 6am, and we got in line just a little before 6. The small line of cars in front of us moved pretty quickly.
By 6:05am we were parked and ready to go.
The lower portion of the trail is paved with sidewalks.
Despite getting an early start, the trail is still fairly busy. You can see the line of people as they hike the trail to the top.
We're not quite to the top yet, but the sun is just starting to rise.
Good thing there was a viewpoint.
T's dad and my dad.
Time to make the push for the summit. I think there's something like 100 stairs to get you to the next level.
And you get to climb through a tunnel.
Once you come out of the tunnel, there's another large set of stairs to greet you.
After you reach the top, you enter some rooms then finally a spiral staircase.
Once at the top, you're in the bunker, overlooking the ocean.
What a view.
The sun is just starting to climb now. It made for some beautiful views.
Looking over towards Honolulu.
The top gets a little crowded. Good thing we're here so early.
About an hour after parking, we had made the summit and were back down.
It was a great morning for a hike.
Love the pictures. I've climbed several times, but never at sunrise. And I'm not sure about the first flight of stairs, but the second flight is 99 steps straight up.
