National Nut Day - October 22nd

Today is National Nut Day! The kids and I love all kinds of nuts. This is the first time we've had this many all together to try.

There's 10 different kinds for us.
From left to right, top to bottom. Pistachios, Walnuts, Peanuts, Almonds, Hazelnuts, Pecans, Macadamia Nuts, Brazil Nuts, Pine Nuts, and Cashews. Whew!

In preparing for this taste test, I knew our local Sprouts' bulk food section would have all the nuts we could want. Because we're trying to determine our favorite nut, I limited the selection to plain nuts with salt. No special seasonings or sweet coatings to skew the results.

Of course the kids like to get involved. Each of them got to scoop different kinds into the bags. Ian's digging in to the Walnuts.

Alli is getting a big scoop full of pecans.

In total, the kids and I found 10 different types of nuts, and the whole thing cost less than $6.

There's a lot to go through. Lets get started. The kids have had many of these before, but some are brand new to them. They both wanted to start with the Pistachios.

Alright, show of hands. Who likes Brazil Nuts? I don't particularly care for them, and whenever you see a container of mixed nuts, those are the ones I always see as the last to go.

What's everyone's favorites?
The kids are big fans of the Pistachios and I have to agree with them. They're really good, but my favorite are the Macadamia Nuts.

Nuts we liked: Pistachios, Macadamia Nuts, Cashews, Almonds
Nuts we didn't: Hazelnuts, Brazil Nuts

But it was still fun to try them all! Happy Nut Day!

  1. I remember, too, how the brazil nuts were last to go in the mixed nuts canisters when growing up :-) Funny thing is, now I like them along with all the other nuts your family tasted (well, the hazelnuts are probably my least favorite but still "okay") Lots of different vitamins and minerals with all those nuts...wonderful snack food any time of the day! Scooping the nuts was a fun activity for the kids...one can see how careful they were doing it, too. Looks like young Broncos fans in the making...nice new jerseys :-) EOM

    1. The Broncos need all the support they can get. The year hasn't been going so well.
I asked the kids to name all the different nuts they could think of. They did a good job and came up with a few extra. Like coconuts and chocolate covered nuts.
