Making Baby Hot Dogs

It's lunchtime and we're hungry. I thought hot dogs sounded good and was getting ready to make them.

Now Alexa is running in our kitchen and suggested making Baby Hot Dogs. Our little reader Ian saw the screen and got excited.
Ian - Can we make baby hot dogs?!?

Well let's see what the ingredients are Ian. There's not too much to them, hot dogs, crescent roll dough, and an egg wash. Aww, but sorry buddy, looking through the fridge I don't see that we have any crescent roll dough at all. Maybe another time Ian. I'll have to look for it on my next trip to the grocery store.
Ian - Can't we make our own bread?
Ian, that's a wonderful idea. I like how you're thinking. We're not going anywhere any time soon so we should figure it out for ourselves.

I asked Alexa for a Quick Bread recipe and got this one for E-Z Drop Biscuits. Now let's see if we've got all the ingredients. Flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, butter, and milk are the easy ones. Now what about Cream of Tartar. Eh... found it! Whew!
Ian asked me, "What is Cream of Tartar?"
Actually I don't know, why don't you ask Alexa.
He did, but got a chemical formula and something about wine making.
Ian - I still don't know what Cream of Tartar is.

Alli, start us off please. We're making a half recipe, so just 1 cup of flour please.

Ian, why don't you take the Cream of Tartar. We also learned the trick of overfilling the measuring spoon and then scraping it across a flat surface on the lid to get it nice and even.

Once all the dry ingredients were in the bowl, they added the wet ingredients and started stirring. This little metal bowl they mix everything in has a habit of spinning around. They help each other during mixing. Ian holds it while Alli is mixing.

And likewise Alli helps Ian too.

I cut up four hotdogs into sixths, leaving us with 24 pieces. Then I dropped the dough onto a silpat, trying to get close to 24 as I could. Turned out to be 21, which I thought was pretty close indeed.

The kids squished pieces of hot dog into the middle of each of the little dough rounds.

After about 12 minutes in the oven, they were ready to come out.

Yum! Looks tasty guys!

The kids were very proud of themselves. I was proud of them too.

We had a picnic lunch in the living room, dipping our baby hot dogs in ketchup and mustard. The kids loved them, saying that we need to make these ourselves more often. Nice job! It was a tasty lunch!

  1. Now that's a fun picnic to have. Not only did they help "pack" the picnic, they helped make it. Ian had a great Baby Hot Dog idea to make one's own bread...being resourceful! Great teamwork during the mixing bowl stage...learning to help each other without being told! EOM

    1. It was a lot of fun. I love the kids are thinking outside the box and figuring out what they can do themselves. We've made bread a couple times since then, though all quick breads at this point. I can't find yeast anywhere.
