It's Sunday night, so you know what that means. It's time to continue our Pizza at Home series and try a new style of Pizza! Tonight we're making pizza Detroit Style!
Tonight we're making Chipotle at Home! There's a whole bunch of stuff that we've got to make if we're going to have a burrito assembly line, just like the real Chipotle.
There's a snack that Theresa and I often buy that is a bit of a guilty pleasure. The Whisps company makes a delicious Parmesan Crisp that is super easy to eat way too many of. The hardest part to deal with for us though is the price-tag. It's $9.99 for a 9.5oz bag ($1.05 per ounce) if you buy them from Costco. Target has a smaller bag but it's $1.88 per ounce. This snack certainly isn't cheap.
Obviously inspired from all our make at home things, Theresa decided to attempt to make them at home!
Today is National Onion Rings Day! Theresa has the national days calendar on her phone keeps an eye out for good ones coming up. So when she saw that it was National Onion Ring day, we planned hamburgers for dinner and onion rings as the side.
Ever since Ruston and I started participating in the Pasadena Chalk Festival, I've enjoyed taking a time-lapse video of our progress. It's fun to see the day compressed into a short 2 minute video clip. This year though, there's a new challenge. Ruston and I are each doing half of a drawing, and doing it in two different locations. It's one thing to line up a couple pictures in Photoshop. It's something else entirely to line up two videos. But we're going to give it a go and see what happens.
Both of us used an iPhone app that Ruston found to do time-lapse photography. It's called Lapse It and I have to say, it was pretty easy to set everything up how I wanted and export the results.
And all these video skills are a new addition too! Before 2 weeks ago, I only had some basic skills to trim and join a few videos, maybe some text overlays and masking, but nothing that exciting. This was new territory for me. Thankfully I found a free video editing program called DaVinci Resolve 16 that had more than enough features to do the job. I was amazed that it's free!
In the end, our two videos were aligned enough that I only needed to twist mine and do a little zooming to get the edges close enough.
The end result was better than I could have hoped! Year number 6 for us is in the books!
It's Father's Day weekend, which means it's time for the 2020 Pasadena Chalk Festival! There's an interesting story behind everything this year, and how this end result came to be. Read on!
Digging into my random cereal pile, I find I've got these Quaker Oatmeal Squares and that they're Brown Sugar flavored. Quaker is known for Oatmeal, so if we're going to try it with something, I figure it should be instant oatmeal.
Sometimes it can be hard having a birthday right around the holidays. That's the case with Ian and Alli. So something Theresa and I have been talking about for a little while was doing a half birthday celebration for them. When they woke up, we gave them the news.
What are we going on? 3 months now that COVID has been a big part of our daily lives? We've certainly been keeping busy regardless. Even with all the posting that I'm doing pretty much daily, there's some things that just don't fit anywhere. Here are those things.
We've done Chick-Fil-A at home before, but some things are just begging to be done again. Chick-Fil-A is one of those. Last time we focused on the Chick-Fil-A chicken sandwich. Today the name of the game is Chick-Fil-A chicken nuggets.
One of the things that I've had a really hard time finding here is good Chinese takeout. One of my favorite things to get is sweet and sour chicken it's been a long time since I've had a good version of it. I'm excited to make Take-away Chinese Food at Home!
Sunday night once again, and that means that it's pizza day. I love pizza day.
So far we've taken on the challenge to make Chicago Deep Dish Pizza and Pizza Margherita. Today for our next challenge, I'm going to attempt a Thin Crust pizza on the BBQ grill.
Encouraged by her earlier success at making a Chocolate Nothing Bundt Cake, Theresa's next attempt was a Red Velvet Cake. After devouring the first cake, the kids were really excited to have her make a Red Velvet Cake with chocolate chips next.
For those special celebrations at home, there's one place we always go to for cakes. Nothing Bundt Cake is always good for a delicious moist cake with a tasty cream cheese frosting. We're celebrating something special today, so what better thing to try and make at home than our own Nothing Bundt Cake!
Today is National Corn on the Cob day! We happened to find corn that was 4 for $1 at Walmart on our last shopping trip, so it was the perfect opportunity to grab a few ears.
There's some treats that we really love that we only get a couple times a year. Cinnabon is one of those things and when we get them, they're delicious. Theresa decided that instead of just having Cinnabon as a treat, we're going all in and making Breakfast for Dinner.
Tonight we're continuing our Make at Home Pizza Series.
There's so many different varieties of pizza (Wikipedia mentions 41!). But I thought that if we're doing a series on Pizza, one of them better be the pizza that all the others are based on.
Whether the stories are true or not doesn't really matter so much to me. What I've always heard growing up is that a Neapolitan Pizza Maker made the Pizza Margherita to honor the Queen Consort of Italy, Margherita of Savoy. He used red tomatoes, white mozzarella, and green basil leaves to represent the colors of the Italian flag. And so tonight, with that in mind, we're making Pizza Margherita.
Skittles makes Freezer Pops? Knowing I like these kinds of things, a friend of mine sent me a text letting me know they existed. After a quick check on Walmart.com, 15 minutes later I had a box being shipped my way!
Alli has seen the box on the shelf in the garage and has been asking me about them continuously. Like every time we get home from a bike ride. After one particularly long bike ride, on a warm sunny day, I figured it would be the perfect time to cool off with a Skittles Freezer Pop taste test.
This "Made at Home" series has been a lot of fun, and we've got a lot more planned. It's a wonder that this one took so long to get to. During normal times, we'd be eating at the Old Time Noodle House almost every weekend. So often that they know our order before we even say anything. We've got to try making it at home.
Today there's an interesting one. When I think about product mashups, Chip Ahoy Cookies and Sour Patch Kids is not one that comes to mind. But on a recent weekly shopping trip to Walmart, the bright yellow packaging stood out. Because we try just about everything the Sour Patch Kids put out, I grabbed a bag to bring home to the kids.
And we'll be trying them along with the Sour Patch Kids Candy. The tagline for this product is Sour. Sweet. Gone.
There's one meal that Alli has been asking for us to make at home ever since we started this whole series.
Alli - Please can we have Chicken Dijon?
It seems like every week, a few times a week, she'll ask if we can make Chicken Dijon. Well lucky for you little girl, tonight is your night.
Gimme a break! Gimme a break! Break me off a piece of that Kit Kat Bar. It's been a busy morning and so for a treat, I told the kids that they deserve a break.
Today we're starting a new series. We'll still continue the other series where we're recreating restaurants at home, but, Sunday is usually pizza day at our house and Theresa had a great idea.
Theresa - Why don't we try to make all the different styles of pizza, but at home?
There's certainly a lot we can choose from. The classic round pizza of course, New York style, Detroit style, a simple Italian Neapolitan, Thin Crust, Pizza on the Grill, and tonight's pizza, the Chicago Deep Dish.
