Pizza at Home - Calzones

It's the weekend which means it's time to attempt another style of pizza at home! Boy we've been busy with this series. So far we've made Chicago Deep Dish, a classic Margherita, Thin Crust, Detroit Style, New York style, Little Caesars, Bagel Bites, and French Bread Pizzas.
Tonight we're going to make Calzones, which I'm still going to count as part of our pizza series. It's really just a pizza that's been folded in half. Let's get started!

The dough for this one is super easy. I based mine on the Real Italian Calzone recipe from allrecipes.com. The Kitchen-aid mixer and the dough hook made it easy to mix everything together. After mixing, the dough had 45 minutes to rise, and then it was ready! See! Easy!

One of the great parts about calzones is that you can make them individual for every person. Our toppings bar includes sausage, mozzarella, pineapple, pepperoni, goat cheese, parmesan, peppers, onions, olives, and ricotta cheese (not pictured).

I separated the dough into sizes appropriate for each person. Theresa, do you like just a few olives on yours? Special thing about calzones is that they only have toppings inside, no sauce! Theresa always likes pizza with barely any sauce on them anyway, so this is perfect for her!

Alright Ian, you're up.

That's going to be a pretty tasty calzone I bet buddy.

And now the next part, sealing everything up. Using a fork you squish the two sides together. Ian did his all by himself.

Alli likes a lot of toppings. Pepperoni, sausage, pineapple, mozzarella, goat cheese, parmesan, and ricotta.

And like Ian, Alli sealed it all up herself. It's great that they like helping out in the kitchen.

Time to make mine. There's still a lot of toppings left. Can't let them go to waste. Good thing I have a bit of dough for my calzone.

With all the calzones made, it's time to put them in the oven. But first, a nice egg wash. That'll give them a nice golden color. About 28 minutes at 375F and these were ready to go.

It's time to dig in! Theresa said "Don't pretend you're eating that salad." Yes, she's right. Chi and Richard will be eating it. It just makes for a little more color and variety in the picture.

Our calzones turned out pretty good.

Theresa's looks beautiful.

Inside the crispy outer crust are piping hot toppings. This dough pocket holds the heat a lot better than a normal pizza.

Mine might have been the biggest calzone on the table. Well, I had a lot of topping to put in there.

Lots of pepperoni, sausage, pineapple, mozzarella, goat cheese, parmesan, and ricotta.

It was super easy and very tasty!

What do you think Ian?

After letting it cool down a bit, he said it was the best pizza we've made so far. Just a tiny bit better than the bagel bites. It must have been good. He ate the whole thing!

And as for Alli, she enjoyed all those toppings she picked out too, and finished the entire thing.

Richard enjoyed his calzone with toppings I wouldn't have normally included like peppers, olives, and onions. Chi preferred just bread, so I used that dough to make a giant breadstick. All of it was delicious! Calzones are a quick and tasty meal!

  1. That was a HUGE calzone with all those toppings! Fun that each person could make and enjoy their own made-to-order calzone with their favorites. Never knew a calzone was really a pizza folded in half...all the different things one learns here! Maybe Ian is discovering he likes pizza without the sauce since the calzone is his new favorite! EOM
