Summertime Lays taste test

I love it when Lays comes up with new flavors. We've been doing some version of this every year since 2013!

First a recap of past years.

In 2013 there was Chicken and Waffle, Sriracha, and Cheesy Garlic Bread.
2014 brought Cheddar Bacon Mac & Cheese, Cappuccino, Mango Salsa, and Wasabi Ginger.
2015 had West Coast Truffle Fries, New York Reuben, Greektown Gyro, and Southern Biscuits and Gravy.
2016 showcased Chinese Szechaun Chicken, Brazilian Picanha, Greek Tzatziki, and Indian Tikka Masala.
2017 had Everything Bagel with cream cheese, Crispy Taco, and Fried Green Tomato.
In 2018 there was an incredible 12 regional flavors. West Coast Truffle Fries (returning), Thai Sweet Chili, Chile Con Queso, Fried Pickles with Ranch, Bacon Wrapped Jalepeno Popper (returning), Fried Green Tomatoes (returning), Deep Dish Pizza, Cajun Spice, Ketchup (returning), Pimento Cheese, Chesapeake Bay Crab Spice, and New England Lobster Roll.
For 2019 we had Lay's Turn up the Flavor Music Icons with
Wavy Electric Lime and Sea Salt (inspired by Pop Music), Flamin' Hot Dill Pickle Remix (inspired by Hip Hop), and Kettle Cooked Classic Beer Cheese (inspired by Rock and Roll).
In 2020 Lay's partnered with different restaurant chains around the country to deliver Flavor Icons of each city. There was Kettle Cooked New York Style Pizza, Nashville Hot Chicken, Philly Cheesesteak, Carnitas Street Tacos, and Chile Relleno

And so for 2021, my brother Patrick made sure to get this year's Limited Summer Flavors.

There's just three this year, not 12 like back in 2018.
For 2021's Summer Flavors, we've got Summer BLT, Wavy Jerk Chicken, and Chile Mango.
We're going to start with the Summer BLT. The bag features bacon, lettuce, tomato, onion, and... is that dirt underneath those tomatoes at the bottom?

The back of the bag promises "A summertime picnic classic, in chip form! Lettuce & Tomato flavor, wrapped in bacony goodness."

A look at the chips themselves. They look like regular potato chips with a dusting of flavor.

Um, does anyone taste any of those flavors? Bacon, Lettuce, or Tomato? We're not getting any of those. I've tasted strong lettuce and bacon flavors in some of their previous chip taste tests, but I'm not getting it here.

Mom tastes mayonnaise. It does have a creamy flavor. I see sour cream is one of the ingredients.

Moving on, next we try the Jerk Chicken, in Wavy chip form.
I just don't like Lay's Wavy Chip texture, and I'm not the only one. It tastes stale even though these are fresh bags of chips.

"Bring a little Island Flavor to your backyard. There's traditional spicy, sweet, and smoky jerk flavor in every bag."

Here's what they look like.

They do have a little bit of heat to them. It's just what I'd want a Jerk Chicken chip to taste like. I like the flavor. I don't like the chip selection.

Mom was not a fan. Alli said "It's kind of a yuck."

Chile Mango is the final flavor. The bag shows Mango, Lime, and Chile. They do look a little spicy.

"Tropical. This Summer the Fruity flavor of mango, combined with the spice & tang of chile peppers makes for a tropical treat!"

They look a little spicy.

Kids - Mmm. Mmm! Yummy yummy yummy!
It definitely tastes fruity. The mango flavor really comes through strongly. There's no spice to them at all that I could find.
Theresa - That's an interesting one. It has like a stinky sock initial flavor...
Megan was gagging. She thought it tasted a bit sour.
Ian - I'm not a mango fan, and I love it.

Going around the room, what are the favorites?

BLT - Gram, Pop Pop

Jerk Chicken - Megan, Patrick, Theresa

Chile Mango - Avery, Ian, Alli, Joe

All the kids and Joe liked the Chile Mango. The Jerk could have won it for me if it had a different chip.

Lays, keep coming up with new flavors! We always like seeing what new tastes you come up with every year!

  1. Variety of favorites in this one, according to the votes! Another winner has to be the descriptions to me: "It's kind of a yuck" and "...has a stinky sock initial flavor" (lol)! But if I had to choose one flavor, I'd like to try the Chile Mango first since it seems to have a good, distinctive flavor. Another year, and another fun Lays taste test! EOM
