Pizza at Home - Florida Oranges Pizza

Happy Sunday! Today I'm back in Florida and it's time to make pizza! And I'm going to be continue my series of pizzas inspired by the states we're currently in. For those of you keeping track at home, here's what I've made so far.

Missouri - Wild Blackberry Pizza
Kentucky - Kentucky Fried Chicken Pizza
Tennessee - Nashville Hot Chicken Pizza
North Carolina - North Carolina BBQ Pizza
Virginia - Virginia Ham and Potato Pizza
Pennsylvania - Philly Cheesesteak Pizza, Hershey S'mores Pizza
New York - New York Strawberry Cheesecake
New Hampshire - New Hampshire Dairy Farm Ice Cream Pizza
Vermont - Vermont Cheddar and Garlic Thin Crust Pizza, Vermont Maple Syrup with Bacon Pizza
Maine - Maine Blueberry Pizza
Massachusetts - Toll House Chocolate Chip Pizza, Fluffernutter Pizza, Boston Baked Bean Pizza
Michigan - Michigan Cherry Pizza
Georgia - Georgia Peach Pizza

And now today I'm going to make a pizza for what Florida is famous for. Oranges! How will it turn out? Guess we'll just have to see what happens.

I made my own recipe for pizza dough and set it in the truck to rise. The warm Florida heat certainly helped it rise quickly. It's mid 70F outside, even in December.

I've been making my own pizza sauce for over a year now too. I haven't written it down anywhere, but it's pretty simple.
In a microwave-safe bowl (or measuring cup) add 1 tsp garlic powder, 1 tsp onion powder, 1 tsp marjoram, 1 tsp of basil, and 2 tsp Italian seasoning. Moisten with water (not too wet) and microwave for 60 seconds (it should smell fantastic). Add 1 can of tomato paste, 1 can of tomato sauce, 1 Tbsp of sugar and stir until everything is well mixed. Refrigerate until you're ready to use it.

Once my dough was ready, I pressed it out into a pizza shape. I'm forgoing the sauce on this pizza and instead spreading a layer of bacon grease on the dough and topping it with bacon pieces.

I peeled a few of my Mandarin Oranges and separated the slices.

I was reminded of an appropriate tweet I saw recently. Thank you nature!

Alli saw that I had extra orange slices left and took off with the bowl. She and Ian love them!

I ended up making 3 pizzas tonight. One specialty pizza and then a half pizza of everyone's choice.

My Florida Orange pizza has orange slices and bacon.

And I added some orange zest and cilantro after baking to top it off.

The kids were quite happy with their pizzas. They've had a busy day of swimming in the RV resort's pool and they are hungry!

The Florida Orange pizza was... interesting. The orange slices held their heat very well based on their high water content. I think I like oranges chilled. The bacon and cilantro did add a good flavor, though Theresa said it reminded her of a breakfast pizza. Orange juice, bacon, and the pizza crust was like a biscuit.
It was a curious pizza, but I don't think I would make it again. Oh well! On to the next pizza!

  1. "Breakfast Pizza" sounds like an interesting description. Despite being an "interesting, curious" pizza, it had a pretty appearance...the small mandarin slices looked like fluttering, dainty petals neatly arranged on the pizza...the bacon and cilantro colors contrasted very nicely with the orange color. Great, shared tweet on the pre-sliced oranges...liked that! I definitely saw Ian's specialty pizza making its usual appearance :-) It was fun trying something different & creative as usual...looking forward to the next creation :-) EOM
