Saturday Morning Cereals - Chocolate Caramel Cap'n Crunch taste test comparison

Another type of Cap'n Crunch cereal? Today we're going to be trying Chocolate Caramel Crunch! So far we've already tasted Regular Cap'n Crunch, Christmas Crunch, Crunch Berries and Oops All Berries, Peanut Butter Crunch, Chocolatey Berry Crunch, Sprinkled Donut Crunch, and Cotton Candy Crunch. How will the Chocolate Caramel Crunch rate? Let's find out!

And because I felt like it, I decided to make my own personal version of Chocolate Caramel Crunch to compare.

Alli is "helping" by tasting the puffed corn I bought.

Ooh, working with boiling sugar. Be careful! This is all going to be based on the recipe I used for Caramel Crack, a treat we discovered while on the road in Tennessee.

The boiling sugar mixer gets poured over the puffed corn.

That all gets stirred up and baked, but it doesn't have any chocolate yet to go with that caramel crunch.

Thank you Hershey's chocolate.

I melted a few bars.

Here comes the drizzle.

Yum!

Let's take a look at the back of the box for the Chocolate Caramel Crunch. We're welcomed to Chocolate Caramelville, where the waters look like they've come right from a Willy Wonka factory. The fish don't seem to mind it though. Isn't the Cap'n facing the wrong way to be rowing upstream?

The side of the box invites us to try all these other great flavors. Believe me, we have!

A closer look at the cereal. We see the regularly shaped crunch pieces, and chocolate balls that look similar to crunch berries.

And a look at my "cereal" treat.

The kids gathered around, but I'm pretty sure they're not eyeing the Cap'n Crunch.

Yeah. It's the chocolate drizzled caramel crack they're interested in.

Avery - Mmm. Yum!
Theresa - I like it better without chocolate. I don't like Hershey's chocolate at all.
Sheila - I love it.
Alli - Me too.

Now for the cereal.

Joe - I wonder which one tastes like caramel.
Alli - It tastes like dirt. Plants and dirt.
Theresa - I don't really care for those. The brown crunches are yucky.
Joe - What do they taste like?
Theresa - Yuck.
Ian - The orange cereal for some reason also tastes yucky.
Theresa - Is it tainted by the brown balls?

Ian - This has a flavor to it. I don't like it at all.
Sheila - Not as bad as I thought it would be.
Megan - I taste nothing.
Theresa - I'm going to go with Alli on the dirt flavor.
Joe - Dirt flavored Captain Crunch?
Megan - It's got a corn meal kind of flavor to it.
Avery - I love it!
Joe - Then we'll send the box home with you. (As her parents shake their heads no)
Joe - Does anyone like the cereal?
Mickey - I would eat it for breakfast.

But is that fair, you say? Shouldn't cereal be eaten with milk?

Let's try it.

It's a bit difficult eating these giant puffs with milk on a spoon, but we managed.
Joe - The caramel crack is better without milk.

Ian - I'm backing out.
Joe - Does having it with milk make it better?
Patrick - The milk helped the cereal a little bit.

In the end, I think it's pretty obvious which bowl held the winner.
Some preferred the caramel crack without chocolate, but it was still decidedly better than the Chocolate Caramel Cap'n Crunch cereal.

  1. Hands down, the Chocolate-drizzled Caramel Crack (or even without the chocolate) is the winner in my eyes, too...the homemade treat looked SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO good!!! What a big miss on the Cap'n Crunch cereal...if "it tastes like dirt" is one of the descriptions, one knows it's not very good (well, Avery is the exception) ;-) EOM
