Lay's Hot 'n' Sweet Chilli potato chip Taste Test Comparison

While visiting Canada earlier this year, I picked up a few different items that were unique to the country. Treats that I thought could make for an interesting taste test once we got home. Here's the first of a what will be a few different chip taste tests!

Lay's Hot 'n' Sweet Chilli chips! Inspired by flavors, or should I say flavours, of India, these chips are made in Canada. I couldn't just taste these chips by themselves though. We always try something to go with them and compare them to. And so, I've brought 3 different sweet and spicy chilli sauces to try along with them!

I thought it interesting that these were Lay's potato chips and not Ruffles. I'm aware of regular Lay's and Wavy Lay's, but never Lay's with ridges. That was always Ruffles.
On the front of the bag, we can also see thai chiles and garlic.

The back of the bag promises a chip that is Spicy, Sweet, Yummy, and Délicieuses.

The chips themselves have an orange color, almost like Cheddar and Sour Cream Ruffles (the best Ruffles in my opinion, but I've never done a taste test with them to find out). They don't smell like them though. They smell a little spicy. With a hint of garlic and chicken broth.

Oh, right. We need to get some other sauces to try along with this.
I found a recipe for a sweet and spicy sauce that uses soy sauce, garlic, ginger, honey, brown sugar, and tabasco.

All that cooks on the stovetop until the sauce has reduced.

And here's our three different sauces that we'll be comparing the chips to.

My homemade Sweet and Spicy sauce.

Mae Ploy Sweet Chilli Sauce. I'm used to having this on Chi's homemade wontons.

And finally Chick-fil-A's Sweet & Spicy Sriracha sauce! When Chick-fil-A introduced this sauce around 2020, it was a game changer! Now I can have my spicy CFA sandwich and make it even spicier! And I can dip fries into it too! It's a great sauce!

But now, it's time to eat!
I pan fried some chicken. Theresa made rice, plus a little bit of spicy cucumber kimchi.

First, let's try the chips by themselves.
Ian has come a long way in regards to his tolerance for spice and heat levels. A few years ago this would be a big NOPE for him. But today he didn't even bat an eye.
Theresa - It's good. It's a muted flavor. A hint of a hot and sweet chilli walked by it.
Alli - And then just like hot. I don't love it.
Joe - It's just a little hot.
Ian - It needs more heat in it. (never thought I'd hear him say that).

Theresa - It needs more of another flavor. Just some other flavor.
Joe - Are you getting any sweet?
Ian - The littlest bit.
Alli - On the first bite.

Theresa - It's burning my gums a little bit.
Ian - I like it.
Joe - Seems like there's just a little bit of powder on it.
Alli - It's not the best. It's kinda like the chicken broth we have in the cabinet. Just a little flavor and heat.

Joe - (smacking my lips on it) There's a little bit of heat on it.
Theresa - If you eat more fast, you get more flavor.

Now for the sauces!
Homemade first!
Theresa - It's definitely more of an Asian flavor.
Joe - For sure. This sauce has a strong soy sauce flavor that the chip does not.
Theresa - It's like a teriyaki sauce, but hot.
Alli - It actually really good. It gives the chicken a different flavor.

And now the CFA Sweet & Spicy Sriracha.
Theresa - That's good. I eat that all the time.
Joe - It's sweet.
Alli - But spicy!
Theresa - It's a closer flavor to the chips.
Ian - Agree.

Finally Mae Ploy Sweet Chilli sauce.
Theresa - Just dunk it in. It's good.
Alli - MMM! I like that. A lot!
Ian - It is good.
Theresa - It's like the Sweet & Spicy Sriracha.
Alli - But better.
Theresa - It's sweeter.
Ian - It's so good!

Alright, so, thoughts on the chips?
Ian - They're good.
Theresa - Yeah, they're good. They're just mild. I wish it was a stronger flavor.
Joe - They don't punch you with flavor, for sure.

And the sauce?
Alli - I like the Mae Ploy first, then Dad's teriyaki, then the Sweet & Spicy Sriracha. The Mae Ploy sauce is closest to the chips.
Ian - I loved that one. It was sooo good.
Alli - But they're all really good.
Joe - T, do you have a favorite?
Theresa - I'm not a one sauce girl. I like to dip it in all the sauces.
Joe - I like variety too.

So, if you happen to find these Lay's Hot 'n' Sweet Chilli chips, give them a try if you like your snacks with just a mild heat.
And if you're looking for a tasty Hot and Sweet sauce, why not give the Mae Ploy Sweet Chilli sauce a try!

  1. "If you eat more fast, you get more flavor"...maybe that's what Lay's really wanted to see happen...if you eat more, have to buy more! :-) Seriously, sounds like the chips are mild flavored but tasty, with some heat (yes, can't believe Ian said it needed more heat!) Different sauces for different moods and times...that's the way to go! Btw, the spicy cucumber kimchi looked very tasty to me, too. EOM
