Cinnamon Toast Crunch Dessert Taco Shells taste test

It's Taco Tuesday! A very exciting day! But what's this? Never did I ever think that I might be combining one of our many Cinnamon Toast Crunch taste tests along with Taco Tuesday. But, as I was wandering around Walmart, I noticed these next to the regular taco shells. 

Cinnamon Toast Crunch Dessert Taco Shells! I mean, obviously we've got to give them a try. 


The box says that they've partnered with Old El Paso, who already make really good taco shells. These shells are blasted with Cinnadust to give them a Cinnamon Toast Crunch flavor. Let's try them! 

Just a few pictures of the box to get us started. 

Obviously meant to be a dessert because they're blasted with Cinnadust. 

Looking over the ingredient list, I see that these are corn tortillas. Corn has a pretty strong flavor, so how will that compare to the sweetness of a dessert? 

On the boxes of Cinnamon Toast Crunch, I always look for the Cinnamoji characters on the bottom next to the UPC. There's no characters on this box though. Oh well. 

Inside, we find a foil bag with our taco shells in it. 

Which are then further sealed by plastic. 

Corn tortillas are always better when they're toasted. Part of the instructions is to heat them up in order to make them crispy. Unheated shells, the box says, will be chewy. No bueno. 

The box also warns against using a toaster oven, but my toaster oven is extra large and has a rack that is spaced just perfectly to let you do this! 

How best to serve these? The box suggest ice cream, pie filling, candy pieces, or fruit. I think we'll stick with the ice cream today. I had to find the tiniest ice cream scoop around (thank you Jacob) in order to fit the ice cream balls inside the shells. 

And Jacob even had caramel sauce! We can totally match the picture now! 

We've got to start eating quickly though. The hot shells coming straight out of the oven, plus the ice cream is going to make a mess pretty soon. Let's get eating! 

Ian - Uh. No. 
Joe - What's wrong with it? 
Ian - Shells and ice cream don't mix. 
Joe - It is a corn shell, that I thought was weird. How's the shell by itself? 
Alli - It tastes like a taco shell. 
Joe - Like a churro chip? 
Alli - Not really. 
Jacob - It might be a little sweeter than normal. The cinnamon definitely isn't overpowering. It's definitely no cinnamon twist from Taco Bell. It's better with the ice cream.

Alli - It's too cold! Biting into the ice cream. 
Theresa - That's what's bad about the ice cream. It makes the warm shell cold. And that's sadness because no one wants a cold taco shell. 
Joe - Are you going to try a bite? 
Theresa - No. Not after hearing Ian. 
Ian - It's not worth the calories. 

Feeling extra adventurous, I got even more Cinnadust and sprinkled it onto the top. This is going to be so cinnamon blasted you won't be able to stand it!

Jacob - Now it reminds me of Mexican fried ice cream. 
Joe - It does have that mexican restaurant style taste. 
Jacob - I like the crunch. It's difficult to eat in taco form though. Maybe if you filled it with ice cream and re-froze it. 
Joe - It might lose the crunchiness though. I like the crunch. 

Ian - Not bad. 
Joe - What's not bad? 
Ian - Just the ice cream with cinnamon and caramel on it. No shell. 

Going off what Jacob said, we took the remaining shells and turned it into Cinnamon Toast Crunch Tortilla Chip Nachos! Scoop up some ice cream with the chip. 

Thumbs down from Ian. 
Ian - The shell tasted like corn. 
Jacob - I'd give it an Even. I'm not sending it back. But I'm not ordering it again. And I ate the whole thing so...

Alli - I give it an Even too. 
Jacob - Maybe if you crushed it up and sprinkled it over the ice cream to get the crunch factor. 

Joe - I don't hate it. 
Theresa - That's not very high praise from you. 
Jacob - But will you buy them again? 
Joe - I won't buy them again. 
Jacob - If they were made from flour instead of corn, they'd be really good I bet. 
Joe - Agree. It could be better with flour. 

So, Cinnamon Toast Crunch Dessert Taco Shells were a little odd. Not our favorite, but interesting to try.

  1. Interesting idea of the CTC dessert taco shells...guess it didn't quite taste as good as hoped. Looks the ice cream w/ caramel sauce is best eaten in a bowl, not a taco shell. That toaster oven rack was a perfect mechanism for warming up the shells, though. To sum it up best, "It's not worth the calories!" :-)...I got a good chuckle from that comment. EOM
