Lays Canadian Salt and Pepper Chips Taste Test Comparison

During our visit to Canada, I picked up a lot of different treats to try. One of those was these Lay's Sea Salt and Pepper chips. Now, I've seen Salt and Pepper chips before, but only in the Kettle Cooked style. How different will these regular Lay's be? Let's find out?

And to compare them, of course I grabbed a bag of the Kettle Cooked Salt and Pepper chips. Actually make that Sea Salt and Cracked Black Pepper flavored chips.

Apparently the standard design for salt and pepper is that they are served in a wooden spoon. The gray (or is that grey in this case?) bag matches the salt and pepper vibe I would expect.

Let's give them a try!
I have to say, I usually prefer a regular thin chip compared to the thicker kettle cooked one.
Nicole - Well obviously there's a visual difference between the two.
Joe - I'm looking at the chip and trying to find the black pepper. It's there, but there's not a lot.
<eating them>
Nicole - Okay, that has another flavor to it that's not just salt or pepper.
Joe - What is it then?

Ian - Sour Cream and Onion flavor.
Alfredo - Yes!
Theresa - Mmhmm. Oh I'd eat that though.
Nicole - I'd eat a bag of those.
Jacob - It's onion. Almost vinegar.
Joe - Time to check the back.

Looking at the ingredients I see salt and pepper, but also onion powder and garlic powder. Just couldn't leave it alone, could they.
The Canadian bag promises Salty, Peppery, Tasty! The Kettle Cooked chips will deliver a Peppery Crunch.
Theresa - It has that almost vinegar hint, and then onion.
Nicole - That has more flavor than I thought it would.
Theresa - I don't really taste the pepper so much.
Jacob - No, not really.
Nicole - It's just sour cream and onion in a different outfit.
Jacob - They're good. But if I wanted sea salt and pepper, I'd be disappointed.

Moving on to the Kettle Cooked chips!
Alli - Nope!
Ian - Tastes like a potato chip.
Jacob - I just get salt. (looks for one with more pepper flakes on it)
Theresa - It's so mild.

Nicole - There's another deli chip they sell at Publix where you can really taste the pepper. This one, I can't taste it at all.
Theresa - The title of this taste test should be "Where's the Pepper?" because in neither of these do I taste pepper.
Alli - <best old lady from the Wendy's commercial voice> Where's the Pepper?
Nicole - Would I eat these again though? Yeah!

Jacob - I do like the consistency of the Kettle Chips more, but I like the flavor of the regular ones.
Nicole - Neither of them even had as much salt as a Salt and Vinegar chip.
Theresa - Yes! I would have thought they'd have much more salt.
Nicole - One of the joys of a Salt and Vinegar chip is that intense salty experience, and neither one of these has that. Interesting. I would not have predicted any of that.
Theresa - But I would eat all of them!
Nicole - Well, yeah, they're potato chips!

If you see these around, pick them up! We liked them, even though they didn't taste like pepper!

  1. "Where's the Pepper?" Taste Test :-)...but it's tasty (not too salty) and has that "Just sour cream & onion in a different outfit" flavor :-)...good descriptions by the tasters! I'll go for the thinner chip if given the choice. Nevertheless, the chips were enjoyed by all. EOM
