It wouldn't be a family get together if we didn't have some big taste test together, now would it?
A few weeks before Christmas, Patrick let me know that he'd found something that showed potential as a group taste test. Cordial Cherries! There's so many different flavors now! I'm in! Whenever there's a box of mixed chocolates, I'm always looking for the one that looks like a chocolate covered cherry.
There's 6 exciting flavors to try! Classic Milk Chocolate, Dark Chocolate, Dark Chocolate with Coconut flavor, Cherry Cola, French Vanilla, and Blueberry. Blueberry?!? What are you doing here Blueberry, this is a Cherry taste test! Hmm, you complete the set huh? That's all the Cordial products that Queen Anne makes. I suppose we'll allow it.
But what is a cordial? According to wikipedia, a cordial is a confection in which a liquid filling is placed within a chocolate shell.
And how does that filling become liquid? It's thanks to an enzyme called Invertase, which is an ingredient in every single one of these boxes. Invertase breaks down sucrose into its component parts, glucose and fructose, which liquifies the sugar into that sweet gooey mess that we all love.
Who likes chocolate cherries!
Joe, Mickey, Theresa, Sheila, Patrick, all the kids.
Theresa - To be honest, I like the chocolate and not the actual cherry.
Avery - Me too!
Joe - I love chocolate covered cherries.
What should we start with?
Ian - The odd one out?
Joe - It's Patrick's taste test, so we should let him decide.
Patrick - We've got to start with the original.
Ian - Avery, we're about to eat candy, so smile!
Theresa - We have to share bites, huh?
Joe - We don't! We have extra!
With 15 people in the house and only 10 cherries per box, Patrick ended up bringing 2 of each flavor. Ah, so that's why they had to check a bag on the airplane. 12 boxes of cherries!
Patrick - There are plenty! There's 20 and then a spare box of one. Don't mix them up because the trays all look the same!
Joe - These seem really big!
Theresa - Oh! It's got to be eaten in one bite. It's really messy.
Joe - Well they have to be a certain size to fit a whole cherry in them! They are very juicy! Is juicy the right word? Megan, what's that face?
Megan - It's very sweet.
Emma - She loves it.
Ian - This is tasty!
Theresa - That was interesting.
Alli - Interesting in a bad way.
Theresa - I don't love the milk chocolate. I want to try the dark.
Just because I was curious, I froze all 6 kinds to get an idea of how much filling was inside each one. Is there really that much liquid versus the actual cherry? The answer was yes! There's lots of the sweet filling to go along with it. The cherry, which is a super bright red maraschino cherry, looks to be only a third or less of the cavity size.
Joe - That creme inside just a little bit reminds me of a Cadbury Egg.
Next up, we have the dark chocolate cordial cherries.
Jon - We have to split these.
Mickey - I like that better.
Sheila - Definitely.
Theresa - All day long.
Megan - It is better.
Ian - That is so good.
Patrick - I also like the dark more.
Eli - I'm sweeted out.
Josh - I liked the dark chocolate more.
Theresa - I liked the dark better, but it's still way too sweet.
Joe - I got a lot of cherry juice in mine. A very strong maraschino flavor.
Alli - I don't like any of these!
Joe - What's next Patrick?
Patrick - I'm excited for Cherry Cola, but I think I want to save it for last. So, let's do French Vanilla!
Theresa - I wonder how the French Vanilla will be different than the regular one? Do they add vanilla extract?
Joe - So there's still a cherry, even though it's French Vanilla flavored.
Patrick - It's not as gooey.
Alli - That's not bad.
Megan - Nope!
Patrick - Megan threw hers away.
Megan - I don't what it is about FRENCH vanilla, but that one was real bad.
Patrick - Oof! That one hurt a little.
Ian - Not a winner.
Patrick - What'd you think Avery?
Avery - I'm hard to impress.
Joe - Are you though? You're the one who gives things a million billion thumbs up!
Patrick - Let's move on to another dark chocolate.
Patrick - The Dark Chocolate Coconut Creme!
Joe - I do like coconut. It definitely smells coconutty.
Ian - Nnn nnn nnn nnn nnnooo. Bleh.
Patrick - I like that one.
Avery - That one is terrible.
Sheila - It reminds me of suntan lotion.
Joe - But they always do.
Joe - I don't know if I love it. But I like it.
Avery - It tastes terrible! A million bazillion google times no!
Theresa - I just spit it out. I can't eat anymore. It's all so sweet.
Finally for our last cherry entry, the Cherry Cola Cordial Cherries.
Joe - Those are so messy!
Theresa - We do appreciate the cutting though.
Patrick - I can definitely smell the cola.
Sheila - If that cherry cola was in dark chocolate, that would have won. But it does not win.
Ian - That was really tasty.
Patrick - I like that one!
Ian - That one is winning.
Isaac - I feel my teeth melting away.
Joe - I'm going to go the other way. I don't love this one.
Mickey - I'm with you Joe.
Patrick - It reminds me of a happy cola.
Patrick - Now it's time for blueberry.
Sheila - I'm looking forward to blueberry.
Patrick - My mouth is starting to tingle...
Mickey - I like that.
Ian - I love it!
Alli - So much better.
Theresa - These are all way too sweet though.
Joe - I like that one. It's right up there with the dark chocolate!
Mickey - I'm with you.
Jon - If I'm going to eat sweets, it's not going to be cherry cordials.
Patrick - Favorite probably dark chocolate. Tie for second is cherry cola and coconut. Least favorite was french vanilla. The blueberry was okay. It was a good change of pace.
Megan - I didn't like any of them. They're too sweet. Dark chocolate was the least offensive. Most offensive was the french vanilla, though I didn't bother with the blueberry. I was done. It was too much.
Ian - The only good ones were blueberry and cherry cola. The rest of them weren't worth eating, besides dark chocolate.
Mickey - I liked the dark chocolate and blueberry. I did not like one bit the cherry cola. The rest are just what I'm used to eating with chocolate covered cherries.
Alli - My favorite was the blueberry and then the french vanilla, then the dark chocolate coconut. My least favorite was the milk chocolate.
Jon - I wouldn't like them at all. If I had to choose candy, it wouldn't be this. If I had to choose this, I'd like it to be a tenth of the size, because it's so big and so much sweetness and sugar, your saliva just becomes... Did anybody really eat six of them? Like 6 whole ones?
Patrick and I both raise our hands.
Jon - The blueberry was the least offensive. The rest were just... they exist.
Sheila - My favorite was the dark chocolate. My next favorite was the blueberry. The regular milk chocolate, vanilla, and coconut tied for last. I would have liked the cherry cola if it had been dark.
Theresa - I am on board with Jon. I used to love these when I was little, except I would just spit out the cherry and eat the creamy center and the chocolate. But these are way way way too sweet for me now. And I love sweets. I can eat candy. But I cannot eat two of those. They are so sweet!
Joe - My favorite was the... blueberry and then dark chocolate. Last is definitely cherry cola. That had a weird flavor that I did not care for.
Jon - I'm going to go lay down and sleep this off. See you guys tomorrow.
Patrick - Gram, I can make you a dark chocolate cherry cola cordial if you like!
He then cut off the back of one of the dark chocolate cordials, scooped out the insides, cut the back off a cherry cola cordial and poured it into the newly liberated dark chocolate shell.
Sheila - That's my favorite now.
Joe - How are they even sweeter than pure sugar?
Theresa - I could eat 6 maples candies, no problem.
Joe - The maples candies are better than all these. Good thing we ordered a bunch to bring to the houses we visited for the holidays! Thank you Jake and Pauline Couture!
And thank you Patrick for bringing everyone this taste test!
