Dots BBQ Pretzel Taste Test

A little while ago, I posted a Dots Pretzel Taste Test, where we tried Original Dots Pretzels, Honey Mustard Dots Pretzels, Cinnamon Sugar Dots Pretzels, and Southwest Dots Pretzels. A short time later, I had to update it because Dots released a new flavor, Garlic Parmesan, which we all enjoyed.

As I was walking through the store, I saw a brand new offering by Dots.

Dots BBQ seasoned pretzel twists!
I'm surprised they've got a new flavor already.

Nicole - Well Dot doesn't own the company anymore. More power to her, she's a millionaire now. It's Hershey and they are probably trying to make a whole line of flavors, like a chip company.

I was waiting for them to go on sale, but Nicole went ahead to Publix and bought them.
Nicole - The world is crazy! Buy the pretzels when you can!

New on the shelves! We've got to try them!

The pretzels themselves are very orange.
Alfredo - They are definitely coated.

How do they smell?
Nicole - I'm not sure what that is... I love BBQ but that doesn't smell quite right. What does that smell like? It's triggering something in my brain, but it's not bbq. Jacob, smell that. What does it smell like?
Jacob - Not good. I don't know if I'm smelling molasses or what.
Theresa - It's like a sweet something.
Jacob - BBQ is sugar and tomatoes.

Last time we really liked the new Parmesan Garlic flavor. I wonder how these are.
Joe - I like the texture. But that's very smoky.
Theresa - Ohhh.
Alfredo - It's a different BBQ. Not like the BBQ chips.
Jacob - It's not as intense as I was thinking it would be.

Ian - That's a real bbq sauce.
Theresa - That's like a real bbq flavor. Like a meat.
Joe - It's a little too much for me. Like, they did a good job making a bold flavor, but, it's too bold. I would only want to eat a couple of those. I don't need a whole bowl.
Nicole - I've had 2. I'm done.
Theresa - That's too bad, because you like BBQ chips!
Nicole - It's too much.
Theresa - You might want to crumble them up and put it on a pork chop or something.
Nicole - Or crumble it on top of a salad. It's not an "eat on its own" snack.
Alli - It's okay, but I don't particularly like it.
Alfredo - I don't think they're bad at all.

There's a BBQ grill on the side.

Nicole - But I like the "bright" bbq. More traditional bbq chips.
Joe - What's your favorite BBQ sauce? I liked KC Masterpiece and the KC Masterpiece BBQ Chips.
Nicole - Sweet Baby Ray's is my go-to. Unless I'm in Minnesota, then it's Famous Daves.

Joe - This side says they're sweet, tangy, smoky, and bold.
Nicole - They're not lying. But they're not going on my Dot's compendium of must-have flavors.
Jacob - They almost taste like burnt ends. Caramelized meat.
Theresa - Maybe too much of that liquid smoke flavor.
Alfredo - Maybe if you mixed this BBQ pretzel with the Honey Mustard Dot's Pretzels. Mix up the flavors.

So, on the ranking of Dot's Pretzels, where do these fall?
Ian - It's my second favorite Dots Pretzel, behind the original.
Theresa - It's my lowest.
Joe - It would be just above the Southwest Style. 2nd least worst.
Alfredo - It's in the middle for me.
Nicole - Honey Mustard, Cinnamon Sugar, and the Original sit in the AWESOME category. Everything else just exists. I would eat it, but maybe not.
Jacob - It's above Southwest.

So don't go into these expecting a regular BBQ chip. These have a bit of a different flavor profile. Maybe you'll like it, but maybe you won't. Either way, if you're a Dots Pretzel fan, why not pick up a bag and give it a try.

  1. Sounds like the BBQ flavor was a little too bold and smokey....but those were great ideas on how to use the pretzels (crumble them up to put on meats or a salad...would be interesting to hear how that works out!...could be a tasty surprise). EOM
