Trader Joe's Pizza Party Potato Chips Taste Test Comparison

Almost every Sunday for at least the past 5 years has always been pizza day at the Flowers' house. Originally we'd buy it, but then I got really into making it myself. I've spent countless hours mixing dough, cutting toppings, and making my own sauces. But why go through all that work when Trader Joe's has us covered? It's Pizza Party Potato Chips!

Well we're definitely going to have to try these out. And just like we always do, we'll make our own and compare the two to see how close these chips are to the real thing.

Wandering through our local (more like an hour away) Trader Joe's, this display greeted me as soon as I walked in!

Pizza Party Potato Chips! And they're only $2.69!

That "Pizza Party" lettering is giving me Showbiz Pizza vibes.

What have we got here.
A BLEND OF CHEESE & GARLIC, PIZZA SAUCE & PEPPERONI STYLE SEASONED KETTLE COOKED POTATO CHIPS

PIZZA PARTY IN A BAG!
We'll have to see about that.

"It's a pizza party in a bag, people! We've taken classic, kettle-cooked potato chips and sprinkled them with a trio of pizza-inspired seasonings: a cheese & garlic seasoning, a pizza sauce seasoning, and a pepperoni style seasoning. On its own, each chip evokes an integral element of a classic pie, but together this tasty triumvirate will practically transport you to your local pizzeria..."

The back of the bag.

The ingredients for completeness.

Well, we can't just have the chips with nothing to compare it to. For about a year now, I've been cooking pizzas outside in my high temperature pizza oven!
The dough for my pizzas starts the night before to develop the flavor of the crust more. It then rises for a few hours until we're ready to cook.

Spreading out the dough, making sure to leave a nice ring around the outside.

Spreading on a little bit of homemade pizza sauce. I cook garlic and onions, then toast some spices, add tomato chunks and simmer it for over an hour. Then the stick blender goes in and turns it all into a sauce.

Normally I'd use from mozzarella cheese (and I will later), but for this pizza, it just gets the pre-shredded mozzarella.

After topping it extra heavy with the pepperonis, I slide it onto my pizza peel and it's ready for the oven outside.

This Ooni pizza oven can get really really hot. When I was first cooking with it, I'd get it up to 900F and throw in a pizza pie. It would sure cook quickly, but more often than not, the bottom of the pizza would start to burn before all the toppings cooked.
I've since found my range, using a infrared thermal gun to see when the stone is 650-700F. It still cooks the pizza in under 2 minutes, so we're not losing too much time.

And just like that, we've got a nice looking pepperoni pizza!

I like how the front of the bag shows the chips being served on a wooden pizza peel.
I'm also displaying them on a wooden pizza peel. I've actually had this trusty wooden peel since college... It's a workhorse! It may not throw pizzas into the 700F oven anymore, but it's great for cutting on when the pizzas come out

Let's give these chips a try!

Theresa - They're not my favorite.
Susan - They don't have a lot of flavor. I think it's kind of a bland party.
Alli - I don't like the potato chips. They're really bad.
Jacob - If you just gave me that, I would not know it was anything to do with pizza.
Susan - It's just a powdered chip.

Ian - They call it a pizza party in a bag. I disagree.
Joe - What do you call it?
Ian - A standard chip.
Alli - That's a weird flavor. It kinda tastes like ginger. I don't really like it.
Joe - So, we're not tasting pizza flavors? You don't get cheese, garlic, sauce, or pepperoni?
Jacob - I don't even know if I get garlic. I barely get salt on that pizza chip.

Theresa (trying another chip) - Oh! That was like a bad taste! When I first bit into it, it wasn't good.
Alli - Like a spoiled taste!
Jacob - The texture of the chip is good. Nice and crispy.
Susan - The heavily powdered ones are better than the pale ones. Try one of those.
Theresa - I think I'm good.
Jacob - Oh! Without the powder they are really boring chips.
Theresa - But with the powder, they're better?
Jacob - No... But you need the powder for flavor.
Theresa - I think one of the spices I don't care for.
Jacob - My favorite italian spice is Italian Seasoning.

Joe - I think Susan hit on it. I think these are three different flavored chips mixed into one bag. Cheese & Garlic, Pizza Sauce, and Pepperoni. That's not overly clear. Even looking at the picture on the bag, they all seem to be the same color, but in real life, there's a variety.

Well, on some chips I got a flavor that really reminded me of a chip I had growing up. Does anyone remember the Pizzarias chips? The seasoning on one of these reminded me of those, though the texture of the chip was different. Pizzarias were in my family's snack cabinet until they got discontinued.

Okay, well, now lets try the homemade pepperoni pizza.

Not a bad fluffy crust. I like the charing, but not burning. And the edges of the pepperonis are starting to get toasty too. Yum!

Tom - That pizza's really good.
Joe - Puffy crust! And there's leoparding on the bottom.
Alli - Without even trying the pizza, I know it wins.
Ian - The pizza wins by a long shot.

Theresa - So good!
Jacob - Extra most bestest pepperoni. But better!
Susan - The real pizza wins hands down.

And we can't stop there. It's a pizza party! We're making a whole lot more pizzas for everyone! Ian has moved on to pepperoni and homemade sausage now.

While others like all sorts of other toppings.

Theresa doesn't even want any red sauce on her pizza. Instead, she uses a combination of mozzarella and borgonzolla cheeses, caramelized onions, prosciutto, figs, and basil. It's a play on the pizza that is served at Disneyland's Napa Rose restaurant and it's an amazing combination of toppings.

And the chef always eats last. I throw on all the tasty toppings including pepperoni, sausage, ham, prosciutto, caramelized onion, pineapple, figs, basil, fresh tomatoes, and red pepper flakes. Drizzle it with balsamic vinegar and it's an amazing flavor explosion!

Well, the Trader Joe's Pizza Party Potato Chips might not have lived up to our expectations, but we had our own pizza party and made a good time out of it anyway. And there's no reprieve for me. I guess I'm going to be making pizzas myself every Sunday going forward still.
